POLICE conducting speed monitoring in Berkeley today briefly abandoned their checks to deal with a fallen tree.

The tree came down on the road, very close to the officers.

The team safely blocked a portion of the road off and arranged for the tree to be cleared.

Officers were in the area as part of Operation Haste, and were targeting motorists flouting limits on the quieter roads.

This follows residents concerns about drivers breaking the speed limit during the lockdown.

These include reports received by Berkeley Town Council about cars speeding in and around the town and especially down towards the power station.

A spokeswoman for the council said: "Please be careful if you are out and about enjoying the lovely weather.

"As part of the Town Improvement Plan Committee we are looking at the on going problems with parking and speeding and are currently analysing the results of the mobile devices that were in place before lockdown.

"We are aware that some action is definitely required. Speeding is not acceptable, it is dangerous and anti-social."
