The team of Avengers and superheroes who visited children in isolation, raised money for Bristol's Childrens hospital and organised competitions and quizzes to keep kids occupied during lockdown, have been nominated as Gazette Lockdown Local Heroes.

Throughout lockdown, children in Yate and Chipping Sodbury received visits from Spiderman, and his team of Avengers and superheroes during their daily exercise.

Youngsters were overjoyed to meet members of the team each week from the safety on their own front gardens, as they stayed safe and kept to social distancing guidelines.

The popular visits started at the beginning of April and the areas visited across Bristol grew, as more and more real-life heroes volunteered their time cheer up children in isolation.

The team also set up a gofundme page to give something back to children in Bristol's Children Hospital

James Fishwick, a business manager from Yate, heard of the incentive through a friend at his running club and swiftly signed up to join in with the superhero action.

James hung up his costume yesterday, and said:

"Being able to become a member of the Bristol Spiderman team has been an absolute joy and pleasure and something I will remember for the rest of my life.

"We find ourselves in very tough and challenging times and when childrens lives have been flipped upside down from the norm, it was amazing to be able to bring a smile, a laugh and some joy to each and every person I visited.

"One particular visit, which was very special to me, was with the vintage birdcage, arranged by Nicole Jones, where I had the opportunity to visit a chap with downs syndrome who was shielding.

"He is a massive superhero fan and I was able to visit him on his 40th birthday with some balloons and a personalised cake.

" He was made up and it felt so good to give something back to the local community.

"The money we have raised through donations, quizzes, competitionsand other incetives has just been incredible and a lot of lives will benefit from everyone's generosity.

"I honestly can't thank people enough for all their kind donations and for all the effort made in coming to see me and all the other super heroes.

"Its at times like this it proves that people can come together and local communities are strong and I am so honoured to be able to say I played a big part in it all.

"Stay safe and keeps smiling."
