Local MP Luke Hall, is celebrating, following an announcement that a half hourly train service for Yate, Bristol and Gloucestershire has been given the go ahead.

Mr Hall has campaigned for the extra stop as part of his Positive Plan for South Gloucestershire.

The new service will be a welcome addition for local commuters who live in Gloucester and Yate, who will be able to get a train ever half hour to Bristol.

The decision to create the extra stops was agreed by the West of England Combined Authority Conservative and spearheaded by Metro Mayor Tim Bowles.

They have also agreed to extend the second phase of the new MetroWest rail network and work towards doubling the frequency of services on the line.

This is the latest successful campaign to improve transport links at the station.

At the start of the year Tim Bowles also confirmed that the station is due to receive £160,000.

This funding has been campaigned for by MP Luke Hall and will be used for a range of improvements such as investment in new shelters.

West of England Mayor Tim Bowles said:

“My MetroWest rail network is going to revolutionise the way that people move around the region, giving us the sort of railway network that we need so we can cut congestion, improve air quality and give people a viable alternative to using the car.

“I’ve been working with Conservative colleagues since I came to office to get these faster, more frequent services delivered and I’m pleased that we’ve managed to change the scope of MetroWest to work towards improving these connections.”

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall said:

“As the first MP ever to live in Yate, I know how congested our roads can be, and I have consistently fought for better transport schemes and links for our towns, such as half-hourly train from Yate to Bristol.

"This announcement really is a huge success for our town.

"It will improve connections for Yate and Sodbury residents commuting into Bristol and Gloucester.

"Our Metro Mayor, Tim Bowles, has worked incredibly hard to ensure the success of this campaign, guaranteeing that half hourly trains from Yate become a reality for our local commuters.”

Leader of the Council, Toby Savage added:

"This success is a great example of Conservatives working together across the Council, Combined Authority and Member of Parliament.

"The demand for services between Yate and Bristol is significant, especially at peak times.

"Providing an enhanced service will be well-received by employees, but also a large number of our students.

"Extending the increased services up to Gloucester is a further very welcome addition and adds considerable weight to our ambitions for Charfield Station and increasing sustainable travel across South Gloucestershire’

A date for the revised changes, has yet to be confirmed.
