Green community transport were nominated as Gazette Lockdown local heroes for their tireless work to support the elderly and vulnerable throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

The team started to deliver emergency food parcels and prescriptions to assist the local community as many of their passengers started to shield from the virus.

Established over 30 years ago, the small company, based in North Road provide accessible transport for those that cannot access public transport, including those that don’t have access to a bus route.

Their fleet of individually named vehicles, are all fully accessible for their passengers, that include elderly and disabled members of the community.

The spacious vans allow for the transporting of the majority of wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

The team of 20 staff are supported by over 30 volunteers that enable the essential service to continue to run

South Gloucestershire council and the West of England Combined Authority support the scheme, however, Manager Jenny Bright said, with the vast majority of their passengers shielding and many community groups not running, Green Community Transport ‘still face difficulties’.

Although the next few months could be tricky, Jenny, is looking forward to adapting the service further to support more in need individuals, especially those at risk of social isolation.

she said:

“We still seem to be the best kept secret in Yate and Chipping Sodbury so we would love for everyone to know about us, what we do and more importantly how to access and use us

“GCT are a very friendly team.

“During the rest of the year we will be altering and creating new services to ensure we are reducing social isolation, increasing independence, alleviating loneliness and allowing our passengers to utilise their local community and its amenities.

“We’re confident we can achieve our ambition of continuing to support our local community. We look forward welcoming back familiar faces, and to meeting new ones”
