STROUD’S Museum in the Park is inviting children and families to make their very own ‘mini museum’ this summer with a chance to win a prize and have their creation shown on its website.

While visits to local museums are still not possible or very restricted, this fun activity can be enjoyed at home by children of all ages.

“Whether you are fascinated by fossils, dream about dinosaurs or just love history and like collecting weird and wonderful things, why not take up the challenge and have a go,” said Kevin Ward, museum development manager.

“Our learning officer, Steven, has put together some tips for you to use as a starting point, and we’d love to see what you make. If you can send us photos of your creations, yours could end up in our online ‘gallery of mini museums’ and you might even win a prize too.

"It’s super easy to take part and you don’t need any special materials.

"You could use an old cardboard shoebox, clean items from your recycling box and objects you’ve already collected.

"Or you could draw a series of artefacts, or cut out pictures from old newspapers and magazines. All you need is some thinking time and imagination."

Councillor Mattie Ross, Chair of Stroud District Council's Community Services and Licensing Committee said: “Finding things to do for children during the summer holidays isn’t always easy, particularly during these unprecedented times. I am really pleased that the Museum in the Park has taken the initiative, and I look forward to seeing some creative mini museums.”

The deadline for entries is Tuesday 1st September and prizes include goody bags from the museum shop, a book token or a Giffords Circus voucher for next year.

The museum also has 50 free activity packs (including the mini museum activity guide) which can be posted out to families who don’t have a printer at home. Call 01453 763394 or email museum@stroud.gov.uk to order one.

Following the successful re-opening of the Walled Garden for pre-booked appointments the museum team are working to ensure other areas of the museum are Covid-secure and look forward to welcoming everyone back when it is safe to do so.
