A 14-year-old motorsport champion has continued his successful start to the 2020 motorsport season with a hat-trick of wins in the Junior American Cup Car Racing series.

Alfie Gendall, from Yate, won the three races at the Birmingham Wheels Raceway on Saturday, August 22.

On Saturday, two heats took place on a dry track in blustery conditions with Alfie starting from the back of the pack.

He worked his way through to hit the front and managed to get clear of the number 7 car of Joe Wood, who finished in second place in both the heats.

Alfie was delighted with the start to the day, saying: "Getting wins in the two heats was a great way to enter the final, the car felt good and I was able to push it through the corners and maintain good speed coming onto the straights."

As the Juniors entered the track on their dry weather tyres for the final later in the afternoon, the heavens opened and they were going to have to race on and deal with the conditions and the slippery track.

With his two wins in the heats, Alfie would start from the back again but by the end of the first lap had carved his way through to take the lead.

Alfie stayed in pole position and took a great win in the very tricky conditions to complete the hat trick for the day, the first time he has managed to take all 3 wins in a race meeting.

Alfie added: "The final was really tricky but the car had good grip even on the slick tyres and once I hit the front I was determined to keep it there for the win.

"Getting my first hat trick of wins in a meeting is fantastic, the car was great all day and gave me great confidence coming into the final with the wet track".

Alfie has now extended his lead in the championship standings to 35 points and is looking forward to the next round on September 5.

Junior American Cup Cars are powered by a Honda GX390 engine and are limited to approx 65mph.

The series is open to 8-16 year olds and is a very safe way to introduce children and teenagers to motorsport. The cars have adjustable suspension, disc brakes, full safety cage and 5 point harnesses so are a great alternative to karting.

Alfie, who is the current British Champion, would like to thank his sponsors including, Williams Automobiles of Chipping Sodbury, the Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury, Powersystems UK, Specialist Motorworx, Pentax, Bristol Cameras, Nikon, Castle Combe and Speed Demon Industries.
