A car meet which was set to bring hundreds of people to Easter Compton this weekend has been cancelled.

Insanity was due to he held at Washingpool Farm on Saturday, but organisers have now been told the event cannot take place.

One resident who contacted the Gazette earlier this week said: "Given the current situation of Covid, surely it is insanity to hold this type of event.

"Whether permitted or not, morally I think this should not be taking place."

Organisers maintained the event would be safe, citing a one-way system and numerous other social distancing measures as well as the fact the event would be closed to public and have less than 300 people.

Speaking ahead of a crunch meeting with officials from South Gloucestershire Council and Public Health England, a spokesman for the event said: "We have cleared every hoop they have put in front of us but this one's on fire."

Following the meeting South Gloucestershire Council issued a prohibition notice, preventing the car meet from taking place.

A council spokesman said: "“Organisers of events in South Gloucestershire have a duty of care to hold safe and lawful events and also to meet the specific challenges posed by Covid-19.

"We offer guidance on what is required to meet these requirements which include having additional risk assessments, social distancing measures and good hygiene practices in place.

“We are actively discouraging large groups of people from meeting up due to the risk of Covid-19, and we advise organisers to give careful consideration before planning an event at this time. Stopping the spread of the virus and keeping our residents safe is our number one priority."

Organisers accepted that there was no way of ensuring people would have followed the social distancing regulations put in place.

A statement posted on the Insanity Facebook page stated: "We are gutted to have to tell you that, due to the safety of all of our visitors and marshals, the Insanity show cannot go ahead.

"Please know that we will come back with a bigger and better event as soon as we can when Covid eases.

"This isn’t what we wanted."
