An 88-year-old woman from Wotton-under-Edge has raised over £800 for charity by walking a marathon.

June Kent, a member of the Inner Wheel club of Chipping Sodbury walked a mile every day to help increase her mobility and to do something to support the charitable projects that Inner Wheel are connected with.

June has recently recovered from her third hip operation and is dependent on a walking frame.

The brave pensioner walked every day in Wotton-under-Edge regardless of the weather until she had completed the 26.2 mile distance

When she crossed the finishing line on Saturday, October 10, she had completed over 27 miles.

Of the challenge, June said: “I just wanted to get out a bit more often and before I realised it I had offered to walk a marathon for charity by doing a mile a day.”

Club president Kay Hobday championed the efforts saying June had been 'an inspiration to us all'

Kay added “She took on this challenge with great cheerfulness and determination to walk the correct distance and has done so with enthusiasm.

"We do not underestimate the huge effort it has taken for June to complete this task.”

Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Chipping Sodbury support each other in friendship and social events while also raising funds for local and international charities.

June commented: “I want to thank the many people who have supported me both by walking with me and by generously sponsoring me to help raise funds. I am grateful to them all”.
