A South Gloucestershire man has been handed a suspended jail term after drunkenly assaulting an Uber driver who tried to kick him out of his vehicle for farting.

James Mallett was on his way to Chasers nightclub in Kingswood in November last year when he broke wind in the back of a taxi.

The driver was said to have suffered abuse from other fares and decided that the flatulence was the final straw - ordering his passenger out of the vehicle.

A court heard that Mallett then reigned down blows on the driver, who also managed to knock down his attacker in self-defence.

The driver has since returned to his native Bulgaria as he was unable to work following the incident, it was said.

Mallett, 35, of Kingswood, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual harm and was handed six months in jail, suspended for two years at Bristol Crown Court yesterday.

He was also ordered to pay £500 compensation and do 120 hours' unpaid work by the recorder Miss Alexia Power.
