A man from Yate will jump out of a plane to help raise funds for the Yate-Genieri community link project.

Peter McNaughton, a trustee of the Yate-Genieri community link will undertake the daring skydive to raise money to help the village of Genieri in The Gambia .

He will jump in tandem with an experienced skydiver, from 15,000ft, on Saturday, November 7 at Dunkeswell airfield, and is asking for everyone to sponsor him via his Crowdfunding page.

Peter said: Thankfully the coronavirus has not reached this rural village, but they have been subjected to severe Government restriction which has meant that no-one could leave the village to go to work in the nearby towns.

"Living is precarious at the best of times in rural Gambia, but with no work, no money to buy food, no savings, and certainly no foodbanks, the whole village is desperately in need of just basic rice.

"Hopefully by doing the skydive we can raise some much needed funds to continue our support to the people of Genieri."

Chairman of the community link, Marian Gilpin said: "We cannot ignore these people, we know them.

"The community of Yate has been linked with the community of Genieri for over 25 years.

"Please help by sponsoring Peter in this extraordinarily daring skydiving adventure."

The local rice harvest does not begin until mid-November. A 25kg bag of imported rice costs £9.76 and this will feed an extended family for 10 days.
