A number of pubs and takeaways in Thornbury are offering free meals to children this week after MPs voted against funding the scheme.

Conservative MPs, including Thornbury and Yate's Luke Hall, voted against funding the scheme this half term - despite a campaign from footballers Marcus Rashford.

The decision has prompted widespread criticism and led to many businesses taking on responsibility themselves.

Among them is Hawkes House, whose owners have expressed frustration at the vote.

A post on the Hawkes House Facebook page said: "We were disheartened by the news that our MPs voted against free school meals during the half term, potentially leaving many families in Thornbury struggling during these tough times.

"Inspired by the work of Marcus Rashford we are going to do our best to help out too.

"We will be offering a free packed lunch to anybody who needs one on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week.

"Simply email us (info@hawkeshouse.co.uk) how many lunches you require and we will have them ready for you in discreet takeaway bags for around 11am.

"The meals will include a sandwich, snack, piece of fruit and a drink.

"Please don’t be scared to get in touch, we are all in this together, no child should go hungry."

The Swan is also offering free meals at breakfast and tea time for children up to the age of 12 who are accompanied by an adult.

Breakfast is available until 11.30am and tea from 3-6pm every day this week. Both meals also come with a free drink.

Butties Sandwich Bar is giving children the opportunity to make their own sandwich, pasta pot or salad box.

Make My Lunch is available Tuesday-Thursday 2.30pm-4.00pm. Contact Wendy on 01454 853453.

Parky’s Chippy will be offering a free packed lunch to children from 11.30am-2pm on Wednesday and Thursday.
