Forest Green secured back-to-back wins in the league as they narrowly edged past Ian Holloway’s Grimsby 1-0 at the Innocent New Lawn.

Jake Young’s first half goal proved to be decisive in a win which sees Rovers move up to third in the League Two standings.

Young repaid manager Mark Cooper’s decision to start the youngster as he got his name on the score sheet yet again. A fine Rovers pass and move routine on 24 minutes enabled Young to find some space in the Mariner’s box and fire home via James McKeown’s attempted parry.

Nicky Cadden very nearly made the perfect return to first team action as he tested the opposing keeper during the opening exchanges. The 24-year-old tried to find the net with a tight angled shot; a decision which left his team mates, who were expecting a cut back, frustrated in the middle of the box.

The conditions changed drastically during the half time break and both sides were met with torrential rain and strong winds as they re-entered the fray. Grimsby looked to capitalise on Rovers playing into the unrelenting weather as a half volley from James Tilley drew a decent save from Luke McGee after 51 minutes.

Despite the visitor’s early second half pressure, Odin Bailey had a glorious chance to double Rovers’ lead on 55 minutes. After his initial effort was saved, his rebounded strike sailed over the bar and deep into the South Stand.

With Holloway’s deafening screams in their ears, Grimsby players started to pile on the pressure in the latter stages of the contest. However, Rovers’ back line remained strong and they were able to register a fourth league clean sheet of the season.

The result moved Rovers ahead of rivals Cheltenham Town before the two sides meet on Saturday afternoon.
