North Road Primary school are the proud new owners of a mural mosaic designed to acknowledge the school’s 170th birthday.

As part of their recovery curriculum and to mark the monumental milestone, teachers at the school in North Road, Iron Acton, wanted to create a piece of whole school artwork that would acknowledge the experiences of the children but also reconnect the children with their important school values, after spending the majority of the year in lockdown.

Since returning to school the children have been isolated into separate class pods, but the teachers felt it was important that every child in school felt a part of the artwork’s creation.

With support from The Arts Society Severn Vale and the Yate and District Rotary Club, artists, Angela and Lynda, from TomatoJack Arts designed and made the mosaic for the front of the school building.

The mural symbolises the different parts of the school including their tree logo and six school values.

The mosaic shows the school's focus of their Recovery Curriculum learning, ‘Somewhere After the Rainbow’.

Headteacher, Sarah Stillie, said: “Children are at the centre of everything that we do at North Road Primary School and at the heart of our mosaic you will see this represented with the faces created from mirror pieces to reflect the children’s own faces.

“As a school community, the staff, governors, parents and pupils, we are dedicated to ensuring the safety, happiness and well-being of our whole school family.

“There are so many unknowns for the future but at North Road Primary School, we will all be modelling our school value of positivity in everything that we do and looking for the rainbows on a rainy day.”
