A Chipping Sodbury based homecare company has teamed up with children from local schools and nurseries to commemorate Remembrance Day with their service users.

Children from Brimsham Green School, Tyndale Primary School and Silver Stars Day Nursery wrote letters and drew pictures of poppies to give to clients of Helping Hands care.

The team at Helping Hands wanted to do something to let their service users feel part of the community after lots of them had reported feeling isolated and lonely, as the pandemic has stopped them having regular, if any, visits from their families.

Helping Hands manager Coretta Kilfoil said: "We decided to start a campaign to see if we could get the community to help us bring our customers some community spirit when they most need it.

"We have had some kind members of public knit us almost 200 poppies for our customers and carers, Brimsham Green School have written almost 100 postcards for our customers and are happy to have replies and create pen pals.

"Tyndale Primary School have written letters and made light catchers, Silver Star Day Nursery has coloured in some poppies for us to display, and one kind member of the public has made us over 100 cupcakes to give out to all our customers and carers."

Service users were overwhelmed with the gestures and said how 'wonderful' it was to receive a card and pictures from the children.

Coretta added: "It’s amazing to see the community pull together at such a difficult time.

"We have many customers who only see their carers each day and to have these lovely gifts from the community will really brighten their day. Some of our customers were young children during the end of the war and will love to hear from the young children now."

Helping Hands Chipping Sodbury works in the community with carers providing assistance with domestic and personal tasks, as well as end of life care.
