A six-year-old boy is going to walk from Yate to Bath, fundraising to take toys to the children on the ward he was previously treated on, at Bristol's Children's Hospital.

Barney Thomas, from Yate, who attends Rangeworthy Primary school, will undertake the huge distance, walking from Yate to Bath on the cycle path with his family for the fundraiser.

The money he raises will be used to purchase toys for children undergoing treatment on the heart ward at the hospital.

Barney was born with multiple heart defects, including two holes in his heart. The specialist teams at Bristol Children's hospital operated on him whilst he was a baby to correct one hole and the other is monitored yearly to ensure it continues to shrink.

Following his own experience at the hospital, Barney decided he wanted to give back after being inspired by the BBC's Children in Need campaign and also after learning about kindness values in school.

He decided that buying toys would help the children who face Christmas in hospital, who are currently having restricted visitors and changes to normality for them, due to coronavirus restrictions.

Dad Darren said: "Barney thought it would be a great idea to try and raise money for the children’s hospital because they made him better so that he could play rugby and do his jiu jitsu.

"I suggested that we do the walk to Bath as it’s quite a long way for a 6 year old but also quite safe as we’ll use the cycle track so probably won’t get lost!

"Come wind, rain or snow- to Bath we will go."

The determined youngster has already wildly surpassed his original target amount of £250, with donations topping £1000 from over 100 supporters.

Barney said: "I am doing this because at school I am taught that being kind is important and it’s kind to do stuff for charity."
