A charity in Winterbourne is appealing for help to feed vulnerable people in the local community this Christmas.

Winterbourne and District Community Association has been closed for most of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but centre manager and Kell's Kitchen owner, Kelly Gower has continued to voluntarily make meals for those in need throughout the closure.

She now plans to extend this over the festive period, offering hampers and Christmas lunches to those in need, as all Christmas parties and meals have been cancelled.

Kelly and her team of volunteers will be making hampers that include all essentials and enough meals to cover the entire Christmas period, so vulnerable, isolated or elderly people are catered for.

Kelly said: "As a community based organisation, it is vital that we continue to try our best to support those in need in our area.

"It has been a very challenging year for everyone and we are aware just how hard it as been for some of our members, especially those who come to our centre as their only means of socialising.

"Throughout the year we have done our best to keep in touch with people who could become isolated and i have continued to cook for them and we have had a great team who have kindly delivered the meals.

"For Christmas time, I was worried that people living alone may struggle to get out to get food and so we decided to offer the hampers to those in need. Last Christmas we were able to open the centre on Christmas Day and were overjoyed to have many people come for lunch, who would have otherwise spent it alone.

"Unfortunately this year, we cannot have people come to the centre, so we hope this is the next best thing we can do to help as many people as possible have a 'Merry Christmas!"
