A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy from Yate has walked over 16 miles to raise money to buy toys for children currently on the hospital ward that he was treated on as a baby.

Barney Thomas, from Yate, walked from Yate to Bath on the cycle path for the fundraiser that saw him raise thousands more than his original target.

Barney had initially wanted to raise £250 to buy a Nintendo Switch for children at Bristol’s Children Hospital but after raising over £3000, the youngster has set his sights on buying a number of the latests consoles including a PS5.

Barney was born with multiple heart defects, including two holes in his heart.

The specialist teams at Bristol Children’s Hospital operated on him whilst he was a baby to correct one hole and the other is monitored yearly to ensure it continues to shrink.

Wanting to give back to the unit where he was treated, the determined boy walked a total of 16.74 miles in just under 6 hours for his fundraiser.

Proud dad Darren said: “Barney managed to cover this great distance, despite falling over on the ice and cutting his hand at the start of the walk near Westerleigh.

“We’ve been overwhelmed at the support we received and can’t believe what he has achieved through his fundraising.

“We’re very proud of his kind nature and the young person he is becoming.”

Barney said his favourite part of the walk was when his brother and grandma came to support him at Warmley.
