SOUTH Gloucestershire and Stroud (SGS) College is delivering food parcels to those enrolling on its new maths GCSE course.

The Food for Thought scheme offers adults aged 19 plus the chance to study a maths course from the comfort of their own home and receive a weekly food parcel worth £25.

The course and parcels are totally free.

During the eight-week course, college staff will deliver food parcels to students.

The parcels contain a combination of cupboard-based products and key ingredients, with additional cleaning and hygiene products and other essential items.

Those enrolling on the course will also be provided with learning materials.

Mark Anthony Jones, head of academic studies said: “Developing confidence and fluency in maths is really important and at SGS we recognise the value in supporting people to develop this essential life skill.”

College principal, Sara-Jane Watkins said: “We understand these are challenging times for many people.

"Our new Food for Thought initiative aims to support our communities whilst providing the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification.”

The college has said that if the scheme is successful it might extend the food parcel initiative to other subject areas.
