Tributes have been paid to a much-loved Thornbury teacher who has died aged 87.

Rita Hitchock, née Bintcliffe, arrived in the town in 1962 after being appointed as an English teacher at Thornbury Grammar School.

In 1970 she became senior mistress and assisted in the transition to Marlwood in 1972 when she became one of two deputy heads.

In tributes on Facebook Rita has been described by ex-colleagues as a ‘consummate professional’.

One of her former students said: “Miss Bintcliffe helped me follow my dreams and I cannot thank her enough for her encouragement, honesty and support.”

Others described her as an ‘inspirational teacher’.

Visitors to Marlwood during Rita’s time would have always been greeted by lovely flower arrangements in the entrance hall.

She loved flowers and arranging them, was a member of Severn Vale Flower Club.

Her talent meant that she was called upon to do the flowers for speech days, weddings and Olveston Church.

Rita was also a founder member of Thornbury Choral Society in 1963 and was treasurer at its outset.

As part of the 50th year celebrations she assisted in producing a book recounting the history of the society.

Retirement brought Rita great happiness when in October 1994 she married John Hitchcock in Olveston Church.

Retirement also gave Rita the opportunity to take part fully in the life of Olveston.

She was president of the Women’s Institute and active member of St. Mary’s Church, singing in the choir for 25 years.
