The best takeaway in Cam, Dursley, Wotton, Yate, Thornbury and Sodbury has been decided.

Over the last month we asked our readers to nominate the top 15 before voting between them to crown the champion.

A range of pubs, restaurants and cafes made the shortlist but the winner was a family-run fish and chip shop at the heart of the Wotton-under-Edge community.

In third place was the Butties Sandwich Shop, Thornbury, coming second was Gravity, in Dursley, but the winner of the Gazette Series Best Takeaway 2021 is Wotton British Takeaway!

“I’m overwhelmed by the support from everyone. This is unexpected,” said manager Anastasia Onisiforou.

“I want to say a massive thank you to everyone in Wotton and the surrounding areas, they really have shown us their support and they’ve been really patient with us.”

Though the Onisiforou family had to close the business for six weeks during the first lockdown, they reopened the shop with click-and-collect and delivery services which proved very popular with customers.

“We try our best to cook fresh and cook the best that we can do and I think that’s been recognized,” said Anastasia.

“During the pandemic people have not had much to look forward to and I think we’ve brought them a bit of normality this last year.”

Orders picked up so much during lockdown that co-owner Chris Onisiforou hired extra staff to keep up.

“It’s been a whirl wind. I’m really happy with how the staff have dealt with everything, they’ve taken to this new system really well and to win this will give them a boost for working so hard,” Anastasia said.

The business is still going strong despite more competitors opening up on April 12.

“We thought it would die down a bit because of the pubs opening, but it’s still busy and we’re still cracking on so overall I’m really happy and I’m happy for everyone else who is getting to open now,” she said.

Wotton British Takeaway has started introducing a new cheesecake range and gluten-free Wednesdays.

“We’re looking forward to being here for another 15 years.”
