A SIX-YEAR-OLD girl from Badminton has raised over a thousand pounds for a children’s cancer charity by having over ten inches of hair she has grown her entire childhood, chopped off.

Amelia Barrett said during lockdown that she wanted to have her waist-length hair cut and mum Jenna suggested donating it to the Little Princess Trust, a charity who use the hair to make wigs for children undergoing treatment for cancer.

Mum Jenna said she assumed Amelia’s initial idea of having her ‘lifetime of hair’ cut off was just something the six-year-old had thought of randomly and that she would change her mind.

However, when Jenna advised her daughter that the hair could be donated to ‘help children that are poorly’ Amelia became determined that having it cut short to help others was exactly what she wanted to do.

When restrictions were lifted and hairdressers re-opened Amelia was one of the first on the books. Amelia, who attends of Trinity C of E School in Acton Turville had over 10inches of her hair cut off, last Saturday and Jenna is preparing to send the locks to the charity.

Amelia’s family set up a Gofund me page and to date the brave schoolgirl has raised over £1100, enough to have two wigs made at the charity.

Ms Barrett said: After she made the decision to have her hair cut, she had to wait a long time to actually go through with it due to lockdown.

“When she was sat in the chair on Saturday, she was absolutely beaming with excitement.

“We are so proud of her, she is amazed that people have been so generous, she asks every day how much has been donated and she is just so happy that she has done such a wonderful thing.”

Upon returning to school on Monday, Amelia received a standing ovation from her classmates for her outstanding fundraising efforts.

Headteacher at Trinity C of E primary, Conrad Hutton added: “It is simply amazing what Amelia has achieved and the amount she has raised, our whole school community is very proud of her.”
