FATHER and son firefighters worked together for just one week.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) senior trainer Ian Hughes was delighted to welcome his son Samuel Hughes to the service, just one week before he left to retire after 33 years.

Five years ago, Ian transferred across to the services training centre and successfully become a senior trainer overseeing all training at Severn Park.

Unbeknown to him, his son Samuel was inspired by his dad's firefighting career, and successfully applied for a trainee firefighter role.

Following the completion of the 12-week intensive trainee firefighter course, a small graduation ceremony was held at the services training centre Severn Park, which saw Samuel receive his certificate of recognition from chief fire officer, Mick Crennell, while proud dad Ian looked on.

Ian said: “Watching Sam successfully complete his 12 week intensive firefighter training course was a career highlight for me.

"It was certainly a special moment for me not only as a trainer, but as a father.

"Being only a week away from retiring I felt fortunate to witness that special moment.

“Sam has learnt from the best, and I know he will have a long and successful career at Avon Fire & Rescue, I can’t wait to watch him develop

"It’s safe to say I am a proud dad."

Sam added: “Since a young age, I was always inspired by my dad and his work to keep our communities safe. He spoke fondly of his time at Avon Fire & Rescue, both as a firefighter, and most recently a trainer.

“It was great having him there throughout my training course, especially at the graduation ceremony where he witnessed me receiving my certificate of recognition from the chief fire officer.

"It was one of the proudest moments of my life, and to have my dad there was a really special moment.”
