Childminders, nurseries and playgroups in the Thornbury have received £1,000 worth of games and books.

The donation has been made by Tracey Gardiner, owner of Thornbury gift and toy shop Rosie & Rex, and Orchard Toys.

The children’s educational games company marked 25 years of its game Shopping List with a special competition. Shoppers buying the limited-edition box could enter a free prize draw, and state where they purchased their game, so retailers could be entered into a separate free draw to win of £500 worth of Orchard Toys products.

Rosie & Rex won and, after Tracey decided to donate her prize, Orchard Toys decided to match it.

Tracey then made up goodie bags full of the games, puzzles and books and offered them to twenty childminders.

One beneficiary was Karen Perrett, of Karen’s Childminding Services.

"The beautiful goodie bag of Orchard Toys games and books I received from Rosie & Rex is very much appreciated and will be an asset to my childminding setting," she said.

Erica Haythornthwaite, national account manager at Orchard Toys, said: "The last year has been particularly tough for independent shops, so Tracey’s decision to support local childminders really highlights how much she cares about her community.

"Rosie and Rex is a fantastic local shop and I’m looking forward to seeing it continue to go from strength to strength."
