Having followed the news coverage on the recent elections, can anyone explain to me why we need polling stations?

Voting in this way can present considerable problems, particularly for the elderly, many of whom do not drive, and have to rely on friends or even taxis for transport, sometimes in inclement weather. Everyone is offered the chance to vote by post, which has to be the simplest and most efficient method, and which avoids the need for polling station staff to sit around for hours waiting for voters, and all the environmentally unfriendly and totally unnecessary car journeys.

Surely, postal voting should be made the standard and only way to vote.
