Attempted murder charges against an estranged Gloucestershire couple have today been dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service after one of the defendants admitted a charge of assaulting the victim.

At Bristol Crown Court Bernard McDonagh, 28, of Draycott, Cam, pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of James Quilligan on June 23, 2020, but admitted causing him grievous bodily harm with intent to do so on the same date.

Tina McDonagh, 27, formerly of the same address but now living in Reading, denied the attempted murder charge and the Crown Prosecution Service accepted her plea and offered no evidence. The case against her was dropped and she was discharged.

At an earlier hearing a relative of Mrs McDonagh had given a surety of £5,000 to ensure that she complied with her bail conditions.

The CPS today also accepted pleas submitted by Bernard McDonagh and he will be sentenced at Gloucester Crown Court at the end of July. The attempted murder charge will remain on file.

McDonagh was remanded into custody until the sentence hearing.
