A man from Yate jumped out of a plane to help raise funds to feed a village in Gambia.

Peter McNaughton a member of the Yate- Genieri community link committee faced his fears and raised over £1000 to help feed the people of Genieri when he skydived from a plane at Dunkeswell Airfield in Devon on Saturday.

Mr McNaughton signed up for the daring challenge nine months ago but weather and covid restrictions meant the dive was postponed until last weekend.

Peter’s aim is to raise enough money to repair the fence surrounding the Genieri village vegetable gardens.

At present vegetables cannot be grown in the patch because without a secure fence and iron gates, animals break in and eat the growing crops.

The committee have already funded a borehole to bring water to the gardens and Peter's jump has raised over two thirds of the £1500 needed to secure the fence.

Before boarding the plane Peter said: "I’ve never done anything like this before, but when I think of how much I spend on food per week, and the variety of foods I have to choose from, I can’t stand by and do nothing – I am, though, totally terrified"
