Column by Ben Stokes, deputy leader of South Gloucestershire Council and cabinet member for adults and housing.

Following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions last Monday, we are encouraging people visiting our libraries, One Stop Shops and other buildings to continue wearing face coverings and give others space.

Although the Government has lifted legal restrictions on social gatherings, face coverings and social distancing, Covid-19 cases and hospitalisations are rising in our area.

The way the virus spreads has not changed. The simple measures that are already a part of our daily lives are still an easy way to help protect ourselves and show consideration and care for those around us. Wearing face coverings in busier areas, giving people space and making regular use of available cleaning stations reduces the risk of the virus for family, friends, as well as staff and for those who may be particularly vulnerable to becoming seriously ill if they catch Covid-19.

You can rest assured that council staff are continuing to follow best practice measures. We are keeping the health and safety measures that have been in place since our services re-opened. These include enhanced daily cleaning, hand sanitiser stations at building entrances and steps to improve ventilation. Library customers are also able to book appointments and continue using a Click and Collect service.

I’m pleased too that by asking passengers to continue to wear masks, public transport operators are encouraging everyone to continue acting in a way that protects fellow travellers.

I want to thank you all once again for the tremendous community spirit we’ve seen so far during this pandemic in South Gloucestershire. I know it’s a long haul but, while we continue to enjoy a greater degree of freedom, let’s continue to think of others and follow Covid-19 safety measures.
