Gloucestershire FA (GFA) are investigating a report that a spectator racially abused a player during a match this week.

A Tytherington Rocks player is alleged to have been the victim of racial abuse while playing in a GFA Challenge Trophy match away to Bristol Telephones on Wednesday night.

Tytherington won the match on penalties, with the victim understood to have been a former Telephones player who scored in the shootout.

A video of the incident has been circulating on social media.

"After the game it was reported to the club that one of our players was racially abused several times during the match," a statement issued by the Rocks said.

"We are utterly appalled by the incidents and we will be working with the relevant authorities to ensure the culprit(s) receive the necessary punishment.

"There is absolutely no place for racism in our game.

"The victim of the abuse has the full support of the club and its members."

In a statement of their own Bristol Telephones said they were 'deeply shocked and disgusted' by the incident.

"We have forwarded all information and footage to the FA to hopefully find and bring any uneducated individuals to justice.

"Anyone that feels it's okay to use any form of hate speech or racial language are not welcome to our community.

"Anyone with information please feel free to come forward via our Twitter page. As we will be fully assisting the FA with any investigation and we will contact the player and work with him to get to the bottom of this and offer our full support.

"We would like to apologise to the player involved and anyone offended by the comments that were made.

A Gloucestershire FA statement said: "We treat discrimination very seriously and will not tolerate it in any form.

"Under the guidance of the FA, we will fully investigate the matter and will act as necessary.

The incident comes at a time when racism in sport is firmly in the the spotlight, with the Yorkshire cricket racism scandal dominating the back pages and England's footballers having been racially abused in the summer.

In September Gloucestershire Cricket apologised to anyone who experienced prejudice during their time at the club, after former bowler David 'Syd' Lawrence revealed he was racially abused by the crowd at an away fixture but the club had never investigated.
