Work has officially started on a 336-home development in Thornbury.

A range of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes are being built on the Cleve Park site, located off Morton Way, after final plans were approved in October.

Residents had claimed the height of some of the houses breached conditions set by a planning inspector, but members of South Gloucestershire Council's strategic sites delivery committee voted six-three in favour.

The council had initially refused planning permission in March 2017, launching a judicial review when the Planning Inspectorate Clive Hughes overruled its decision. The appeal was dismissed by the High Court in Feburary 2019.

Landform Estates sold the 55-acre site to Miller Homes last year, which is now being turned into a new development known as Cleve Wood.

Commenting on the development’s recent update, Martyn Grimes, operations director for Miller Homes West Midlands, said: “We can easily see why Thornbury has consistently been recognised as one of the best places to live in the UK and we are delighted to be starting work on this latest neighbourhood, Miller Homes @ Cleve Wood, bringing beautiful new homes to such a sought-after area.

“We’ve been working closely with the local council and residents to ensure that the new development will be sympathetic to its surroundings. As well as being grateful for their feedback, we have also been inspired by their passion and pride for their local community.

“Over the course of the next few months, we’ll see our planned investment injected into the area, helping to benefit both new and existing residents, as well as giving the wider community the means to flourish further.

“We’d encourage house hunters to register their interest early. Due to its proximity to vibrant cities and beauty spots, the market town of Thornbury has already proven popular with aspirational homebuyers looking for a picturesque yet commutable place to live.”
