A SECONDARY school in Thornbury is celebrating after receiving a 'good' Ofsted rating in it's recent inspection.

The Castle School upheld its 'good' rating, a grade the school and its Sixth Form has consistently held for almost two decades.

The inspectors had many positive comments to make about the school including the “raised expectations of pupil behaviour”, “rich extra-curricular programme” and praise for the anti-bullying ambassadors.

Mr Joe Docherty, Headteacher at Castle School said they felt particularly encouraged by the recent inspection and that the report echoed comments made by parents in recent feedback.

The report said: “The school has seen a period of rapid change since the previous inspection.

"A new headteacher and several new senior leaders have joined the school.

"Together, they have ensured high standards in pupils’ behaviour. They have gained the confidence of staff.

"Parents have noticed the positive difference that leaders have made. For example, many parents highlighted the high standard of remote education provided during national restrictions because of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

“Curriculum leaders are ambitious for their subjects. They think carefully about how they can best prepare pupils for the demands of the next stage of their education.”

Mr Docherty said: “We felt particularly encouraged by the recent inspection.

"I would like to congratulate the staff and students on their consistent hard work and resilience in these times. We are, however, always looking for ways to improve. We discussed these areas with the inspectors who could already see the progress we have made through our own self-evaluation. I’m excited for what’s to come at The Castle School.”

The Castle School is part of the Castle School Education Trust (CSET), which also includes Marlwood School, Mangotsfield School, Downend School, Charfield Primary School, Lyde Green Primary School and Severn Beach Primary School.

CSET’s CEO, Will Roberts, added: “Joe and his leadership team are doing an excellent job and it is fantastic to see them getting recognition for leading the school's journey of improvement.

"There are so many fantastic parts of The Castle School life. Our students, staff and the community are right to be proud of these developments and their achievements.”
