A CHILDREN'S play area in Thornbury has been shut after asbestos was found in the ground.

The newly refurbished play area off Chantry Road and Tilting Road was closed by the town council last week after a small amount of  'low-risk' asbestos was found in the ground where new play equipment had been installed.

A qualified asbestos contractor has tested the area and the council are now awaiting the results.

A spokesperson for Thornbury Town council said: "As soon as we became aware of the small amount of low-risk asbestos, the area was immediately closed off and thorough testing was carried out by a qualified asbestos contractor.

"We have been awaiting results of the testing and clarity around the next steps before updating residents."

The council say they have been advised that the top soil at the site should now be excavated and disposed of before being replaced with fresh soil and that they are currently arranging for the works to be carried out.

The spokesperson added: "We understand that many years ago the area may have been a dumping ground for construction waste, and it is likely that the recent works have brought previously buried asbestos material to the surface.

"We wish to assure residents that we have complied with the expert advice of our health and safety advisors and the specialist asbestos contractor at all times, and that the risk posed is very low.

"We share the frustrations of residents concerning the delayed opening, but we will always prioritise health and safety."

The play area will be opened as soon as the required works are complete and it is safe to do so.

The town council are also considering what improvements could be made to another play area, off Eastland Avenue.

"At this stage we are keen to get feedback from residents, particularly those who live near to the play area, to inform these initial plans and designs. A full consultation will be carried out once we have potential designs to share with members of the public."
