ORGANIST David Shaw is pulling out all the stops to help realise the dream of a new arts venue in Thornbury.

The highly respected musician - choirmaster and organist at St Mary's Parish Church in Olveston - is set to give a special recital in the church to help raise funds for the Arts and Community in Thornbury (ACT) campaign group.

Director of Music at St Mary's for 25 years, David took up the piano at the age of six but made the decision at an early age to switch to the organ and went on to study in Altrincham, Cheshire. His first post as a church organist was at the age of 15.

During his long career, David has played in many cathedrals in the South West and in Dublin and Armagh.

Many people in Thornbury will also remember him from his 25 years as conductor of the Thornbury Choral Society and as musical director of the Parish Players at Tockington for several years.

David's academic career took him to The University of the West of England as Head of Microbiology, his specialist subject being Virology. He retired last year.

David has a very eclectic taste in music and a keen sense of humour, both of which will be reflected in the recital. The programme ranges from Bach and Elgar to Scott Joplin and he will be joined by his church choir.

David said: "I'm a great supporter of the ACT project to build a performance and visual arts centre in Thornbury. I think it is a marvellous venture and just what the town needs so I' m delighted to help out."

Tickets for the recital on Thursday, April 17 (7.30pm) are available from Thornbury Garden Shop in High Street, Thornbury and also from Jenny Dennis on 01454 417038.
