DRIVERS are being advised to plan ahead and be aware of potential delays during this evening's rush hour on the M5.

A section of the northbound carriageway across the Avonmouth bridge has been closed for safety reasons due to a carriageway defect, with a 50mph speed restriction in place between junctions 19 and 18.

National Highways says it is anticipated to cause slight delays during the evening peak and is advising drivers to plan their journeys this afternoon ahead of emergency repairs taking place overnight.

Danish Gill, National Highways’ South West Bridges Group Manager, said: “We identified a safety fault with one of the carriageway bridge joints earlier today and are planning to carry out emergency repairs under overnight lane closures.

“In the meantime, and with the single lane closure in place, we are anticipating slight northbound delays during the afternoon and evening peak and advise drivers to plan their journeys and allow a little extra time.”

The overnight repairs will be carried out between 9pm and 6am with a single lane running over the bridge from junction 19.
