The government has introduced a requirement for voters to show photo identification (ID) when voting at a polling station at some elections.

This new requirement comes in to force for the first time at the local elections on Thursday 4 May 2023 and also applies to Police and Crime Commissioner elections, UK parliamentary by-elections and Recall petitions. From October 2023, it will also apply to UK general elections.

Although a new change, the vast majority of electors in South Gloucestershire will already have an acceptable form of voter identification.

A wide range of photo ID will be accepted, including passports, UK driving licences, biometric immigration documents, identity cards, blue badges and bus passes, amongst others.

It’s also worth noting that if you vote by post you do not need to provide ID, unless your postal vote is lost or stolen, you will then need to provide suitable ID for a replacement postal vote.

Anyone that doesn’t have an accepted photo ID can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate. The document is free and is specific for the purposes of voting.

The quickest and easiest way to apply for the Voter Authority Certificate is via the government website (link below), alternatively, if you are unable to apply online you can apply in person via appointment at South Gloucestershire Council’s offices in Yate.

Voter identification is first being required in polling stations at the local elections on 4 May 2023.
