A high street clothing shop in Thornbury has closed its doors for the final time.

M&Co - which is based in the St Mary Shopping Centre - closed on Thursday, April 13.

A spokesperson for the Thornbury M&Co told the Gazette: “Staff thank the loyalty of their customers over the many years they have been trading and bid a fond farewell to all.”

Clothing retailer M&Co - which has about 170 branches - is due to shut all of its stores after being bought out of administration.

Up to 43 M&Co stores will close by the end of the month and up to 51 M&CO branches have already closed their doors in what has been a difficult year for the fashion brand.

M&Co, previously known as Mackays, is said to have started as a pawnbroker in Paisley, Renfrewshire, in the 19th century but switched to selling clothes in the 1950s.

The Scottish chain was bought by AK Retail after being put into administration for the second time in December.

However, branches around the UK announced on social media that the deal did not include the stores or staff.

A notice on the M&CO website reads: “M&Co online is no longer trading. AK Retail has acquired the M&Co brand, with plans to relaunch the web platform in the coming months.
