STUDENTS in Yate were given the opportunity to peek behind the scenes and see homes being built at a nearby development.

A group of 12 Year 10 students from Yate Academy visited Bellway’s Ladden Garden Village development off Clayhill Drive in the town last month.

Site manager Callum Sharp, construction manager Kai Lacey and sales advisor Lucie Elvins talked to the group about various stages of housebuilding from land acquisition through to planning and design and the sales process.

During the visit, the students were shown a three-bedroom mid-terrace house that is adaptable for people with accessibility needs.

Students were also informed about different foundation designs and why each may be selected by an engineer.

Back in the sales office, the group learned how a site can be transformed, once planning permission has been granted, with different construction phases and sales processes.

Rhys Davies, DT teacher at Yate Academy, said: “I got in touch with Kelly Rees, Bellway Sales Advisor, who kindly forwarded my details to the correct department.

“On behalf of Yate Academy, I want to thank Bellway for arranging this site visit.

"Our students received a fantastic opportunity to develop their knowledge of roles within the construction industry and how they interlink with one another.

“At the academy we place great emphasis on giving our students careers support and guidance.

"The site visit was a great way for our students to see a working environment outside the classroom.

"When Bellway invited us to Ladden Garden Village we were delighted as it gave our students the chance to talk to Callum, Kai and Lucie who are experts in their field.

“We’re looking forward to visiting Ladden Garden Village again soon and students are excited about the possibility of learning more about work experience and apprenticeship opportunities at Bellway.”

“At the end of the visit the students were given a guided tour of two of the showhomes."

Bellway is building 247 new homes at Ladden Garden Village development in Yate, including 86 affordable homes available for local people through low-cost rent or shared ownership.

Rachel Way, sales manager for Bellway South West, said: “As Yate Academy is local to the development we wanted to invite the students down to have a guided tour and learn about the range of careers available within the housebuilding industry.

“We are glad to hear the students gained a positive insight into various jobs in construction and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the academy and discussing how we can further help their students in the future.”
