AN INSPIRING schoolgirl from Yate is hoping to reach new heights in an epic climbing challenge.

Nine-year-old Rosie Atkinson is aiming to complete 100 climbs in one day as quickly as possible next month.

This works out as roughly the equivalent of ascending El Capitan - known as El Cap - in Yosemite Valley, California.

Rosie, a year four pupil at The Ridge Junior, was inspired after seeing famous American rock climber Alex Honnold complete a climb up El Capitan without any aids or protection.

The challenge is due to take between three to five hours and will take place at The Climbing Academy in Chippenham on July 24.

Rosie is raising money for Climbers Against Cancer.

Rosie’s dad Darren Atkinson said: “Rosie chose El Cap after watching Alex Honnold complete his free solo up the same face.

“She loves climbing and wanted to challenge herself and raise money for this really amazing charity, especially as it is their 10th anniversary.

“Any donations would be amazing and can be given using the following link/QR code.”
