THERE were delays along the M5 near Bristol earlier today as police dealt with an incident involving concern for someone's welfare.

The M5 Southbound between junctions 18 and 19, Avonmouth and Portishead, experienced delays after a 'police-led incident' at around 11.30am today, Wednesday (July 26).

A police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the M5 southbound carriageway between junction 18 (Avonmouth) and junction 19 (Portishead) at around 11.30am today (Wednesday 26 July) following a concern for welfare.

"The road was closed for a short time while emergency services attended and the person was taken into the care of an ambulance. 

"The road has now been reopened." 

A spokesperson for National Highways South-West said: “The M5 southbound between J18 and J19 near Bristol is now open following an earlier police-led incident. 

“There are residual delays of at least 20 minutes in the area.”
