A NEW housing development on the site of the former derelict Newport Towers Hotel near Berkeley has officially been unveiled.

A show room is now open for viewings with estate agents Boardwalk, offering a selection of 39, three and four bedroom homes.

The hotel, which closed in 2007, is located along the A38 and was the target of two separate arsons, a destructive fire in April 2019 and another in September 2020.

A councillor had previously described the brownfield site as "neglected" and "a magnet for anti-social behaviour."

A planning application was eventually submitted by developer Ede Homes for 39 homes and a community shop on the site and was given approval by Stroud District Council in June 2019.

The district council finally approved the final conditions for the application in November 2020, and the building was demolished the same month.

Construction is still ongoing and has been named the Copper Beech View development.

Boardwalk managing director, Nick Stopard said: "It's brilliant to see the rejuvenation of a disused site, bringing quality housing options that are sympathetic to their natural surroundings for those looking to move to the Gloucestershire area, within easy reach of Bristol.”

A spokesperson for Ede Homes said: “Having owned the site for many years it is great to see such an iconic, brownfield site regenerated and re-developed into high quality housing, this is something we are very proud of.”

A brochure reads: “Copper Beech View is the latest, upcoming development from Ede Homes comprising a high quality selection of three and four bedroom homes, nestled within the Vale of Berkeley.

“Roughly 20 minutes from Bristol, Copper Beech View balances the convenience of a short commute with all the benefits of a more rural lifestyle.

“The Gloucestershire countryside is right on the doorstep and the smaller towns in the area offer all the facilities you need for everyday life."

The show home is available to view via Boardwalk on 01179898222, with viewing commencing by appointment.
