A MAN has been charged in connection with a bomb hoax which led to the evacuation of a police station and nearby properties over the weekend in Patchway.

A “suspicious” item was found in Patchway Police Centre near the A38 at around 5pm on Saturday, August 5.

The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was called to examine the device.

Meanwhile, a 100m cordon was put in place and nearby residents and businesses were asked to leave their properties as a precaution.

The disposal unit eventually concluded that the item did not “present a risk to the public”.

Jason Lenton, aged 43, of Southmead, Bristol, was charged during the early hours of this morning, Monday August 7 with making an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose and making a bomb hoax.

A police spokesperson said: “Lenton remains in police custody pending an appearance at Bristol Magistrates’ Court today.

“We’d once again like to thank the public who were affected by the cordon for their patience and understanding while the disposal unit attended.”
