CONCERNS have been raised after a key road connecting Yate and Chipping Sodbury has closed for two weeks, adding to the area's mounting traffic woes.

As of Monday, Station Road in Yate will be closed day and night to allow for “essential repairs” to the stone arch bridge by South Gloucestershire Council's street care team.

The two week closure started on Monday, August 14 and is due to end on Friday, August 25.

The diversion route is Station Road (B4060), High Street (B4060), Horse Street (B4060), Cotswold Road (A432), Kennedy Way (A432) and Link Road (B4059).

Despite the main route connecting Yate into Chipping Sodbury being closed, residents and shoppers are urged to make note of the diversion route and note that all businesses in the high street will remain open.

Rich McD, one of the chairs of Chipping Sodbury chamber of commerce, said:“All businesses in the Chipping Sodbury High Street and at the Ridge are open.

"We are concerned about the effect this closure might have on the High Street and we will be monitoring it closely.

"We do however appreciate that this essential maintenance work has to be done."

A spokesperson for the Wool Cellar, based in Chipping Sodbury High Street said: "Please follow the diversion signs with the black circles.

"All the retail shops, businesses and the Chipping Sodbury summer search are open will be running as usual."

A council spokesperson said: “The majority of the work will be underneath the bridge, which carries traffic over the River Frome, so it will not always be obvious what work is going on.

“The work has been scheduled to take place during the school summer holidays to minimise disruption as traffic flow during this period is lighter.”

The latest closure adds to a growing amount of existing road works and closures in the surrounding area.

This includes overnight closures on the M4, multi-way temporary traffic lights on Westerleigh Road, and the closure of the Badminton Road overbridge.

In an update on Friday, July 21, National Highways, which maintains the bridge, said earliest the A432 could reopen would be in December.
