A COMMUNITY project in Yate which has given out and recycled hundreds of bikes has celebrated its first anniversary since it was launched last year.
Yate Community Bike Project was first set up in May last year and has grown significantly from a pop-up to a permanent hub with a newly refurbished base in South Walk, Yate Shopping Centre.
The volunteer group, which was launched by Climate Action Yate and Chipping Sodbury, aims to help the community access and provide bikes which are low cost and environmentally friendly.
It is believed the group has recycled approximately 600 bikes since its launch.
The recycled bikes have been described by organisers as a “lifeline” for those most in need, providing them with free and low-cost, eco-friendly transport.
It has also helped people to access job opportunities, educational resources, and essential services.
Co-director Rebecca Bennett said: “We are thrilled to see the transformation of the hub as the revitalised space will enhance the experience of our community of dedicated volunteers who make the work of the hub possible.
"The refurbished hub will create a space where community members can come together, learn and share their love for cycling."
Volunteer workshop lead Bob Keen said: "We are delighted to have been able to recycle over 600 bikes and place them back into the community.
"This milestone represents our commitment to sustainability, accessibility, and social responsibility.
“Through these recycled bikes, we have not only reduced waste but also made a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families in need while providing a welcoming and inclusive space for our volunteers.”
Organisers say they are eager to continue its mission of promoting cycling as a sustainable means of transport while nurturing the volunteer community.
The revamp was supported by De Vere Tortworth Court, which helped refit the hub’s workshop.
The group would also like to thank One You South Glos, South Gloucestershire Council, Yate Shopping Centre and Yate Town Council for their support.
