FRIENDS and families in Thornbury recently enjoyed Ukrainian cuisine as part of an event to raise money for the continued relief effort as the war there rages on.
A packed-out fundraising dinner in aid of Ukrainian charities was held at the Ronnie’s of Thornbury on Thursday, August 17.
Since the Russian invasion last year, more than 100 Ukrainians have been hosted by local families and many are now building a new life for themselves in the community.
An all-Ukrainian kitchen staff prepared a tasty four course dinner showcasing the tastes of Ukraine.
The event raised more than £3,000 for Ukrainian charities and is expected to raise more.
Meals featured some classic and delicious dishes including Borscht, Golubtsi (meat stuffed cabbage leaves), Varenyki (filled dumplings), followed by desserts Medivnyk (honey cake) and Uzvar (dried fruit and berry compote).
The entire event was coordinated by Ukrainian national, Victoriia Shchavinska who said: “I love the UK.
“So many people have been welcoming to me and my fellow Ukrainians.
“We just wanted to showcase the best of our national cuisine, raise some much-needed funds and to say a huge thank you to local people who have taken us into their homes and into their hearts.’’
Heather Staley, who spearheads the local Ukrainian support group, said: “The evening was brilliant!
“The food was absolutely delicious and the pleasure and pride of the Ukrainians providing their national dishes for us to enjoy was palpable.
“It was a wonderful, if a little emotional, evening for us all.’’
Natasha Harrod, whose family has been hosting Ukrainian guests said: “The evening could not have gone better.
“Last night was a celebration of all that we have been through together, but also a reminder that we must continue to stand with Ukraine.’’
Victoriia would like to give special thanks to Ronnie Faulkner for allowing the use of his restaurant and to his team who volunteered to help at the event.
Victoriia would also like to thank Barbara Sullivan and South Gloucestershire Council for their sponsorship of the evening.
