The Sodbury Slog is a big draw for runners in the area - an iconic 10 mile multi-terrain race with roads, hills, mud, streams, obstacles, ponds and .. more mud !

The event, organised by Bitton Road Runners, attracts big crowds - even on a wet, cold November Day.

Traditionally held on Remembrance Sunday, the race has a poignant and moving short service before the mass start at Chipping Sodbury School before heading down the High Street.

The route takes runners across Sodbury Common and up a 100 metre climb to the top of Horton Roman Camp before winding down through paths, fields and roads to the finish back at the school.

This year saw a win for Ben Rawlins (Westbury Harriers) as the GB triathlete regained his title in dominant fashion to pick up the £100 first prize.

Leading from the start Rawlins, who lives just a short walk from the start, put in a super-fast first mile to lead the race as it entered Sodbury Common.

The chasing pack of runners included a number of top runners including Rawlins’ team mate Will Massey.

Rawlins held his lead over Massey on the tough climb and then pulled away on the descent to finish strongly, with Bristol & West pair Dan Shepherd and Rich Elston battling in 3rd and 4th places.

Winner Rawlins said “I felt strong today and, despite the tough conditions, really enjoyed the race. It’s great to win my local race”.

With Anthony Glover in 5th place and Matthew Cant in 6th place, Westbury Harriers clinched the team prize.

Amazingly, Glover had driven back from Glasgow on the Saturday evening after representing Ireland in the International Masters Cross Country Championship.

Annabel Granger of (Bristol & West) impressively won the women’s title in 1.15.47. T

here was also a superb effort from blind runner Chris Blackabee (Bristol VI Runners).

Running with his guide Colin Johnson he completed the arduous course in just 1 hour 55 minutes.

Westbury Harriers / Yate AC coach Mike Mewse said “ It was a great occasion and we were pleased to win both the team and individual Sodbury Slog titles.

"It’s one of our favourite races and our first five runners all live in Yate and Chipping Sodbury.”
