A NEW project has been launched in Cam to improve youth facilities at a playing field.
An inspiring consultant to engage with local young people is being hired by Cam Parish Council to help transform Jubilee Playing Fields.
The parish council says an existing youth shelter on the fields needs replacing.
As part of the new project, councillors want to directly engage with children aged between 11 and 17 to find out what they would like at the fields.
Before any work begins, the new consultant will lead face-to-face engagement feedback sessions with young people, incorporating their suggestions into plans.
It is hoped that once the project is completed, the space will become an exciting and welcoming place for all young people.
Vice-chair of council, Cllr Miranda Clifton said: “For some years the parish council has been working on its plan to develop facilities on the Jubilee Field.
“As (mostly) not very youthful parish councillors, we are very aware that we don’t know what young people in our community really want.
“In order not to make any expensive mistakes and to ensure that the views and wishes of our younger residents form the basis of the next stage of our plan, we are looking for someone who can work with formal and informal groups.
“In collaboration with those groups we want them to help us design facilities that will make the field an exciting and welcoming place for young people, not just skaters, scooters or footballers.
“We want to make sure that it’s a place where young people can spend their leisure time, both active and inactive, doing what they want to do, side by side with all the other members of the community who also like to make use of the beautiful resource which is the Jubilee Playing Field.”
The new project follows the opening of two new, £100,000 play areas for children at the fields in October last year.
Car parking facilities have also been transformed.
Every year, various events take place at the fields, including Cam Everside FC matches, family days, dog shows and this year's Coronation celebrations.
