MAJOR plans which could see the demolition of a warehouse in Thornbury to make way for a new supermarket have officially been submitted.

Lidl has recently applied for planning permission to South Gloucestershire Council to build a new store along Midland Way.

The proposed site is currently occupied by clothing supplier Alexandra Workwear, which has been based in the town for nearly 30 years.

If approved, the new Lidl would include a sales area with five aisles, a warehouse delivery area, freezer room, bakery, manager’s office, staff facilities and customer toilets.

In addition, 95 car parking spaces would be created including six disabled spaces, eight family spaces plus two EV charging spaces as well as five cycle hoops installed.

It is believed up to 40 new full and part time jobs would be created.

Under the plans, a new pedestrian access would be created from Midland Way, plus a main vehicle and site entrance off Whitebridge Gardens.

The store’s roof will also have solar panels to help power the store plus a heat recovery system using waste heat from refrigeration.

According to the application, Alexandra Workwear, which employs 28 people at the existing site, is due to vacate the building on December 24 when their lease expires.

It is understood Alexandra will eventually move to another premises in the Thornbury area.

The Lidl application was submitted on Monday, November 20.

It comes after the budget retailer launched a consultation in August, asking residents for their thoughts on the proposal.

The consultation received approximately 1,692 responses, with 1,455 in favour and 167 opposed.

According to Lidl, concerns raised included the possibility of increased traffic on Midland Way, the impact of retail on the town centre, and the location of the store entrance.

A planning document reads: “An inclusive public consultation has taken place regarding the proposals for a new food store on Midland Way in Thornbury.

“Feedback has helped inform the planning submission and we will continue to accept feedback throughout the post-submission phase.

“We are confident that Lidl will not have a significant impact on town centre retail.

“It is important to recognise that Lidl does not directly compete with many other town centre retail businesses.”
