A NEW grant scheme has been launched in the hopes of reopening empty high street units in Thornbury, Yate, and Chipping Sodbury.

The programme which is being introduced by South Gloucestershire Council says it will support landlords, property owners and businesses to reopen vacant shops.

The council hopes that reopening more units will improve the appearance of high streets, increase footfall, and increase a sense of pride in communities.

The maximum grant award amounts range from £2,500 to £25,000 with match funding of 25 per cent required from those applying.

The grant can be used to fund building extensions and improvements, fit-out costs, and new equipment that is necessary for the business to provide services.

The programme focuses on eight high street areas including Chipping Sodbury, Station Road in Yate, Thornbury, Downend, Filton, Hanham, Kingswood and Staple Hill.

The council says it wants to support new and existing businesses and enterprises.

Emma Blackham SGC service director for place said: “We want our high streets to thrive and recognise that empty units can blight a neighbourhood which is why we have launched the Vacant Commercial Property Grant scheme.

“The grants will help bring empty units back into use and bring new life to the high street, attracting more visitors, creating new jobs and improving the vibrancy of our high streets.”

The scheme officially opened on January 22 and the closing date for applications is June 20.

The funding has been provided through the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, administered by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA).
