A MAN has been remanded into custody charged with the murder of an 80-year-old who died at a retirement complex in Cheltenham.

Jonathan Moore, 63, of Welland Court, Prestbury, Cheltenham, made a brief appearance before Cheltenham Magistrates Court accused of murdering Henry Mayo.

Cathy Thornton, prosecuting, told the court Mr Mayo died on the evening of April 14 at Welland Court following alleged “contact” with the defendant.

Ms Thornton asked for Moore to be remanded into custody as the court had no power to grant bail in murder cases.

Presiding Justice Andrew Tabor remanded the defendant into custody and ordered him to appear before Bristol Crown Court on Friday.

He said: “You are being sent to the crown court at Bristol for the offence of murder.

"You will attend there for a preliminary hearing on April 19.

“You will be remanded into custody until then.”

Previously, Gloucestershire Police said Mr Mayo was found to have sustained fatal wounds and was declared dead at the scene.

On its website, Welland Court is described as a “retirement housing estate” with bungalows and flats purpose-built for people over the age of 60.
