A YATE man has admitted possessing a fighting dog under the dangerous pets act.
Joshua Devine, aged 35, of Milton Road, Yate, admitted being in possession of an XL bully when he appeared at Bristol Magistrates Court on June 10.
The court register states that the dog was found at Devine’s address on March 12.
Owning an XL bully is banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
The case was adjourned for sentencing.
From February 1, it became an offence in England and Wales to own an XL bully without an exemption certificate.
Anybody who owns one of the dogs must have the dog microchipped and neutered and keep it muzzled and on a lead in public, among other restrictions.
The Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991 says it is illegal to own or have custody of any breed classified as dangerous without specific exemption from court.
This legislative piece specifically categorises XL bullies under section 1 due to their potential threat and history as fighting breeds.
