A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER who was born before the Titanic was even built has celebrated her centenary.

Irene Dutfield was born in Frampton Cotterell on August 5, 1909.

She later moved to Yate and had a daughter, Shirley Higgins, and now has one grand-daughter and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs Dutfield has been a widow to her husband Alec for the past 40 years and now lives at The Glen, Yate.

She marked her 100th birthday with a party for family and friends at Poole Court, where she was presented with a bunch of flowers by town mayor Cllr Ian Blair.

Her daughter Shirley said: "She has had a lovely time and really enjoyed herself. She received a card from the Queen.

"Mum was thrilled that her oldest friend, Eileen Wilcox from Chipping Sodbury, who is 93, came to the party. They have known each other for years."
